Root Resorption

Root resorption is the gradual degradation of the root wall.  Factors leading to resorption include:
  • Tooth infection. See Endodontics
  • Trauma
  • Periodontal infection. See Periodontal Disease
  • Orthodontic pressure
  • Pressure from an adjacent impacted tooth

Before treatment is initiated, it is important to determine the causative factors. 

The case below illustrates a root resorption (R) that occurred several years after trauma to the front teeth.  Note that one of the teeth is missing and replaced by the bridge.
