Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry is a broad category that includes fillings, crowns and bridges.  The goal is to replace damaged tooth structure and restore function.  Damage to teeth can be caused by several factors including decay, trauma, clenching/grinding, acid reflux, or abrasion from over zealous brushing.  The extent of damage will determine the type of restoration needed to give a long lasting result.

  • Small cavities can be repaired conservatively using a variety of filling materials.
  • Larger areas of decay, presence of fractures, or teeth previously treated with root canal therapy will require protective coverage (crown).
  • Bridges are similar to crowns in that they provide protective coverage, but also span between teeth to fill a gap from a missing tooth.  Also see implants.
