Teeth are comprised of three layers starting from the outer to inner: Enamel, dentin, and pulp.
Damage that comes in close proximity to the pulp layer will usually cause symptoms such as:
  • extreme & prolonged sensitivity
  • spontaneous pain
  • constant or intermittent throbbing
  • discomfort when biting

These symptoms usually persist until treatment is initiated.  Depending on the severity of pain or presence of infection, medications may be prescribed to manage these issues.

The goal of root canal therapy is to remove the diseased pulp tissue and seal the roots to prevent further contamination.  Once root canal treatment has been completed it is then necessary to place a protective crown over the tooth to complete the seal and prevent further damage to the already vulnerable tooth.
See crowns in restorative section.
